PHU MY PORT – SAIGON STORIES OF HISTORY TOUR (-/L/-) |
The morning, our driver and tourguide will pick you up at Phu My Port, transfer to Ho Chi Minh City. Start to visit the Saigon Secret Commandos Bunker of Viet Cong. The bunker is located in a house on Nguyen Dinh Chieu Road, District 3, HCMC, and was used to hide the arsenal of Saigon Commandos. Among them are about 2 tons of weapons, which were prepared for the Tet Offensive (January 1968). You will see how they hide the weapon and move them inside the bunker during the Vietnam War.

Continue to visit Cha Tam Church, built around the turn of the 19th century, this decaying light-caramel-painted church exudes a sleepy, tropical feel. A pew in the church is marked with a small plaque identifying the spot where President Ngo Dinh Diem was seized after taking refuge here with his brother Ngo Dinh Nhu on 2 November 1963, after fleeing the Presidential Palace.
Thich Quang Duc was immolating himself
After that, our guide will take you to visit The Thich Quang Duc Memorial. At midday on June 11, 1963, Thích Quảng Đức took a ride in a car to the corner of Phan Đình Phùng and Lê Văn Duyệt Streets. He then got petrol poured over himself, sat in the middle of the junction in the traditional meditative position, struck a match and burned himself to death without a movement. He aimed to protest to Diem’s South Vietnamese regime and its persecution of Buddhists, arresting many Buddhist faithful and ransacking pagodas to advance the agenda of the country’s Catholic minority.
Next we will stop at the War Remnants Museum: Formerly known as the Museum of American War Crimes, this is a poignant display of the futility of war. Some of the black and white photography in the ‘Requiem’ exhibit is particularly touching, dedicated to both foreign and Vietnamese journalists and photographers who perished during the conflict. The courtyard outside contains the spoils of war, namely rusting jets, tanks and cannons captured from the American military machine.
A tank crashed through main gate of The Reunification Palace on 30 April 1975
Visit from outside of The Reunification Palace: This is one of the most important buildings in the city. Here on April 30th 1975 the ‘American War’ officially ended when tank number 843 of the North Vietnamese Army crashed through the gates of what was, at the time, the residence of the President of the Republic of Vietnam.
Have lunch with Vietnamese Noodle Soup – “Phở” at the local restaurant more than 50 years old.
Visit the former US Embassy where the last helicopter flew out of Saigon in 1975. Then you can go sight-seeing at the Notre Dame Cathedral and Old Post Office: built between 1877 and 1883. This is one of the best examples of classical French colonial architecture. Remarkably every stone used in its creation was shipped from France to Vietnam. Her two 40m towers, topped with iron spires dominate the city’s skyline. The Old Post Office is another example of French colonial architecture and is also the country’s largest post office.

Continue to visit Dong Khoi Street – formerly Rue Catinat – made famous by Graham Greene in his best-selling book “The Quiet American”, The Rex Hotel where most of American stay when they live in Saigon and Ben Thanh Market / Saigon Square – the central market with plenty of local products.
